Library Lists: Books and Media

(Revised November 2010)

Library picture

Purpose:

Serves as a core resource to strengthen the Christian faith of the John XXIII community (children, youth, adults), with a special emphasis on university ministry, faith formation, religious education, liturgical and music ministries, pastoral care, and the theologian-in-residence program.  Other members of the larger Fort Collins community may use the resources if they have a local phone number or email address.

Resources:

Includes over 2,000 titles: books, magazines, audio cassettes, videos, digital discs and products. When available, use of online resources and digital products is encouraged in place of the acquisition of printed materials. For example, the complete Catechism of the Catholic Church is available online along with many other church documents and reference tools. Few fiction titles are included.  Strong areas in the collection include bible commentaries and studies, spirituality, biographies and autobiographies.  A special collection of ‘Holy Land’ resources includes guides, histories, and maps.  Some of the presentations given at the Sunday Morning Education Program for adults are preserved on video.

Collection Policy:

Collects most categories on a highly selective basis that represent titles of high quality. Preference is given to materials issued during the past twenty-five years unless they are classics in the field; gift items are added to the collection if they are in good condition, fit into the collection policy, and do not duplicate existing items. There are multiple copies of some titles that have been acquired for small faith-sharing groups.  See titles with a prefix of GC (Group Collection).  Materials readily available from other local libraries and repositories will generally not be acquired.

Locating Materials:

There are two notebooks on the library counter by the entrance. One notebook includes three lists, one by authors, one by titles, and one by subjects. Note that titles that begin with articles such as “A,“ “An,“ and “The” are not used in the filing. To locate an item on the shelf from any of the lists you need to note the classification number. Also check the prefix to the classification number to determine whether the item is a book, video, or audio item.  See the list of prefixes below. Printed materials can be located by going directly to the shelves. Most audio and video materials are locked in the glass cabinets. You can obtain a key at the reception desk in the lobby for these cabinets.

All materials in the DVD format are listed in the “Browse for DVDs” notebook. Photocopies of the container covers are filed in the notebook. For a DVD fill out a “request slip” and drop it in the checkout box. You will be notified when the DVD is available.

Blessed John XXIII also has an on-line library catalog. You can do keyword searches in the author, title, and subject fields.

Checking Out Materials:

The loan period for materials is four weeks. There is a checkout card for all library materials (books, audio and video items) in each item on the shelves. Please fill out the card by printing your name, phone number, and the current date. Deposit the card in the check-out box on the counter by the book shelves. Please use “Reference” materials in the area and do not remove from the library.
